The winter solstice is the day the sun stands lowest. At Stonehenge it draws thousands of people into the circle at dawn, on a morning when normal rules about the visitor path are lifted.
This post covers the 2026 date, what English Heritage has announced as of October 2026, the rules it applied at the last open access, and the tours that work around it.
The quick answer
The solstice falls at 20:50 GMT on Monday 21 December 2026, so the first sunrise after it is on Tuesday 22 December. English Heritage lists 22 December as the winter solstice on its opening times page. English Heritage runs the solstice sunrise as free Managed Open Access. No London tour on this site goes to it, and at the last open access, the September equinox, no public transport ran. English Heritage had not yet published the full 2026 arrangements in early October: watch its solstice page.
When is the winter solstice at Stonehenge in 2026?
The solstice itself is at 20:50 GMT on Monday 21 December 2026. The sunrise celebration at the stones is set for the next morning, Tuesday 22 December.
Royal Museums Greenwich gives the moment of the 2026 solstice as 8.50pm GMT on Monday 21 December (Royal Museums Greenwich). That is after dark, so the first sunrise of the lengthening days comes on the 22nd.
English Heritage's opening times page agrees: it marks "the Winter Solistice (22 Dec)" and warns that opening times that day are subject to change (English Heritage opening times). Sunrise on the plain is just after 8 a.m. at this time of year. In 2025 it came "shortly after 8:00AM" (English Heritage).
| What | When | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Winter solstice moment | Monday 21 December 2026, 20:50 GMT | Royal Museums Greenwich |
| Solstice date in the English Heritage calendar | Tuesday 22 December 2026 | English Heritage opening times |
| Sunrise at the stones | Just after 08:00 | English Heritage, 2025 solstice |
| Normal opening that day | 09:30 to 17:00, subject to change | English Heritage opening times |
Has English Heritage confirmed solstice access for 2026?
The date is in its calendar. The event page with access times, parking and conditions for 2026 is not out yet.
As of 8 October 2026, English Heritage has not yet published its winter solstice 2026 page; it will appear on the solstice page. The same goes for the spring equinox in March 2027.
What it calls Managed Open Access is free. That is how it described its most recent event, the autumn equinox on 23 September 2026 (English Heritage). Check the solstice page again in early December before you plan the night.
Not tied to the solstice morning? Inner circle dates return in December, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
Check dates for the inner circle, Lacock and Bath dayWhat is the winter solstice at Stonehenge like?
Busy, cold and dark until just after 8 a.m. About 8,500 people came in 2025.
English Heritage counted around 8,500 people at the stones on 21 December 2025, and more than 240,000 views of its sunrise livestream (English Heritage). In 2025 the sunrise was greeted with drumming, dancing and cheering.
It is nothing like a Stone Circle Experience with 26 people. If you want quiet among the stones, book a normal winter session instead. If you want the crowd and the ritual, the solstice is the one morning of the year for it.

What are the rules at solstice open access?
No touching or climbing the stones, no alcohol or drugs, no large bags or glass, and no public transport.
The latest conditions of entry English Heritage has published are the ones for the autumn equinox on 23 September 2026 (English Heritage). Access ended at 8.30am that day.
| Rule at the autumn equinox 2026 | Detail |
|---|---|
| Cost | Free |
| The stones | Do not touch or climb on them |
| Alcohol and drugs | Not allowed in any area of Stonehenge |
| Banned items | Large bags, glass, bladed items, sleeping bags, tents, naked flames, pets other than assistance dogs, amplified music |
| Car park | Opened at 5:15am, cars out by 10am |
| Public transport | None |
| Rubbish | Take it home, or bag and bin it at a marked point |
Can you get to the winter solstice on a tour from London?
Not with the tours on this site. None of them goes to the solstice morning, and no public transport runs to it.
Getting there means a car or a taxi. English Heritage names Salisbury, about 12 miles away, as the nearest station, and you need to be on site before first light. The summer solstice in June has its own coach tours from London; the winter one has none here.
The practical alternative is a Stone Circle Experience in the days around it. The inner circle day with Lacock and Bath restarts in December, from $222, with a 5:30 a.m. sunrise departure. The Evan Evans day with Windsor is the other option, from $255. Pack for frost: what to wear to Stonehenge.

The quiet way to see a winter sunrise: an hour inside the circle with your group, then Lacock and Bath.
